I remember Bessie Moore sitting in Maggie Carter's flat (Upper Burnmouth) singing Changing Partners one evening. She seemed to me quite a character. That would be in the mid 70s. When did Bessie die? Did she live to agood age?

Anderson Moore
Left another message on another site asking for information on Anderson Moore. We grew up together in the Gorbals, Glasgow and his Mum gave me one of the best holidays ever in Burnmouth. Unfortunatly I cannot remember any of his relatives although there were a few. Andy's older brother made a nameplate for their "cottage", called it "the Moorings", it was at the end of the row overlooking the railway line. Appreciate if anyone can give me any information as I will probably be visiting within the year from Canada and would like to meet with him again.
Thanks, Irvine.

Andy Moore's well and still living in the village (my dad's Cousin). Remember the odd visit as a youngster i
to Glasgow with his family (Davy his Brother) and his mum ('Aunt Bessie') we would visit Jean, Bessie Kirkland? If those names ring a bell? drop me an email and I'll print it off and get Andy to drop you a line :-) Stew

Stew(art),
Appreciate you getting back to me as quick as you did, hope everyone is well and what is Andy working at now or has he retired ?? This is quite the web site for such a small village, very surprising. Hope this goes through with my 'e'mail address as others that I sent through the "Friends Reunited" site have not, tell him he can also check that site, there's even a happy smiling 16 year old in a school picture, (irv73@rogers.co). Pat, my wife and I have been in Canada since'78 with son and daughter, live in a small town called Paris, about an hour west of Toronto. Stew, I've got to get back to work, break's over, again thanks for getting in touch and hope everyone is well.

I remember very clearly visiting "Auntie Mary" and Ailsie as a girl. They lived in a house at the far end of the right hand side road. Ailsie used to "go to the whelks." If anyone would like info. on the Burnmouth families who moved to Mallaig, please email me. Best wishes, Jane

Posted by Jaane on 26 June 2010
I remember being taken to visit Mary and Ailsie by my uncle alistair who lived in Edinburgh. In the eaely 50s Mary Martin lived at 6 Cowdrait & her cousin Ailsie lived at N No 8. They later moved to the house at Ross (with your back to the harbour, last on the left before you turn the corner into Ross). Mary Martin died in 1967 - she is listed on the family stone at Ayton Churchyard. But when did Ailsie die? Info. would be welcome. Janet

Fraser family
Hello. I have been trying to trace my husbands grandmother, Sarah Fraser, for a long time and can find only her marriage, to Walter Tyrrell in Newcastle. She only stated that she came from Scotland, and her father was Andrew Fraser from Dunbar. In the now released 1911 census, it states that she came from Burnmouth, year of birth 1862. Could anyone tell me who I could contact to try and trace Sarah and her family.
Your help could open a few doors for us. Many thanks in anticipation.

Dear Doug
Sorry for the delay in replying, we have just got back from hols in the Western Isles of Scotland.
What a marvellous man you are!
You have even traced this all the way through to my father-in-law, Fredrick Tyrrell.
I just don't know what to say.
This information has filled a huge gap in my husbands family tree. His father, Fred, left home aged about 15 yrs, and went south. There he joined the Royal Navy and only returned home to see his father, when the Navy informed him of his mothers (Sarah) death. Hence the reason my husband knew nothing about his ancestors.
I have successfully filled the tree with Tyrrell's but was completely stuck with the Fraser side.

I can't thank you enough. We hope to visit the Eastern side of Scotland in the near future and you can bet Burnmouth will be on our list.

Once again, many many many thanks for your help.

Regards Susan Tyrrell

The Gulls Nest
My father who used to be a lorry driver used to stop at the Gulls Nest for refreshments approx. 20 years ago on his jounrney from Notts to Perth.
As a family we used to stay in some chalets to the rear of the Gulls Nest - owned by (we believe) John Aitcheson, the son of the lady who at the time owned the Gulls Nest.
We truly love the area.
I just wondered if John Aitcheson and his family are still living in Burnmouth.
(My family and I vistied the area two weeks ago and noticed that the chalets have now been removed).
Thank you.

Yes John and his parents still live in the village but they no longer have the gull's nest or first and last as it is now known

My dad John Aitchison senior has asked me to respond. He would like to know your dad's name and who he drove for if poss as he remembers a lot of the drivers by name.
Posted by The Aitchison Family on 16 May 2010
Hi
Thanks very much for the reply.
My dads name is Roy Walker.
He drove a Green Volvo lorry from Osberton Estate, Worksop.
I believe that dad was one of the first people in The Gulls Nest when it first opened and we hired the chalets to the rear of the Gulls Nest on a couple of occasions.
Dad says he may remember him by his purple sleeping bag which was often remarked upon.
Posted by Steve Walker on 17 May 2010

Did he deliver the 'tatties' cause my mum and dad remember him and his sleeping bag! A lovely man!
Next time you are in the area you are welcome to visit down the brae or refer to Shoreline Cottage in the Holiday Cottages link as this is the new chalet!

Burnmouth customs and traditions
Hello Folks,

If anyone out there knows of any customs, traditions, festivals or superstitions still practised in the Burnmouth area and further afield in Scotland, a new national inventory has been set up on which you can record them. Do Burnmouth folks carry out any rituals, have a village Gala Day or do anything unique on Hogmanay? If you add these to the 'ICH in Scotland Wiki' on the internet, they'll join others which will be seen around the world. It's a UNESCO inspired project so Burnmouth first-footing could be up there with Argentina's Tango!

That was Allister Affleck too along with someone called Ian...
Posted by Stew Bell on 12 February 2010
Ian Gillie was the lad standing with Alister, and the skipper of the boat was Peter Struthers. The boat 'Dolly Graham' was named after the Graham's who lived at Cliff Cottage ( I only remember Jimmy Graham and his dog Sheba!). Dolly apparently paid the down payment for the boat?
Posted by Stew on 13 February 2010
The two lads are correctly identified as Alastair "Atty" Affleck and Ian Gillie. The first crewman to come into view was Ian's father, Andrew Gillie. The skipper in the wheelhouse was Norman "Belge" Dougal, who belonged Eyemouth.

Hi is this the one you are looking for
Hi, I live in Mallaig in the West Coast of Scotland! many Burnmouth families moved here (after the railway was opened up) to fish for lobsters. My own grandfather was Sammy Martin and other families were the Johnstons and the Aitchesons, all have descendants living here. As far as I can make out most Burnmouth fishing families were related to each other. Best wishes Jane

Mary Harrington Martin d 4.6.1967 aged 59 (sister of Sammy)Lived at Burnmouth with her cousin Alison Spouse Martin who was daughter of William Martin, brother of James. Mary died from a stroke.
William Martin had a fishing boat called The True Vine - information in the Gulls Nest, Burnmouth. Mary Martin appears there in a couple of photos, with her cousin.

Aitchison/Carlyle info
What a brilliant website! Am trying to trace my family and the pictures of old Ross and Cowdrait really help with picturing life as it was.

My grandfather (Edward Carlyle) was sent to live with his maternal grandmother (Agnes Aitchison the mother of Annie Aitchison Carlyle) in the late 1890's. He was born 1895 and was living in Cowdrait in 1901 census.

I would love to hear more about the Aitchisons - or if anyone knows why grandad was sent up here from Hull. He went on to be apprenticed to Mr W H Lugton as a blacksmith, before joining up for WW1. I see from this website an Aitchison was also a blacksmith in the same regiment, which can't be a coincidence?

Grateful for any contact.

PS Thank goodness for sorting out the Cowdrait, Ross and Partanhall divide - I was flummoxed before!

Hi I have only recently discovered your web site and came across an article 'James Johnston 1844-1926, I am a direct descendant of his Father Alexander and mother Helen Lindors, my grandfather with brothers and sister moved to Mallaig because of better fishing opportunities and eventually founded "Johnston Brothers" ship chandlers and oil merchants, I unfortunately am the only one left that can remember Old Sandy Johnston and some of his first's, would love to talk to interested parties.

Dear Alexander, I was born at Partanhall, Burnmouth almost 83 years ago and have made an interesting hobby of connecting all the families of Burnmouth. I can connect to Johnstons, Aitchisons, Martins, Fairbairns, Paulins and Spouses. Some of those families went to Mallaig and I connect to them too.Would you care to tell me your line of descent from "Old Sandy Johnston" please? In return I will e-mail my Website address containing all my extensive family history research. Many thanks and best regards, Walter
Posted by Walter Vincent Holden on 29 July 2009
Dear Walter
Thanks for your reply,I am not descended from old Sandy, he never married, he was my great uncle and the driving force behind his brothers and sister, my grandfather was John Johnston, I have managed to trace back to Paul Johnston and Ann Hardie and on the maternal side to James Lindores and Marion Martin any other information would be great.
Regards Sandy

Dear Sandy,
Thank you for your response and I would be only too pleased to help with your family connections to Burnmouth. If I am correct, I have it that your Grandmum (Catharine Anderson), died at Mallaig on 2Oct1939. Is that correct?

If you were to e-mail me direct (you should have my e-address from the Burnmouth FH Forum) then I will give my Internet site address to view all that I know.

Anderson connections
Firstly a very happy new year to everyone and many thanks to those who kindly helped with family tree research in 2008.

I wonder if anyone can confirm the following? My great grandfather was James Anderson, 1st cousin to John Anderson (1856-1927) who lived in Nulla Ghar in Burnmouth on his return from teaching in India.

I have been given an interesting letter sent from Karachi to my great grandfather from a Robbie dated 1927 and talking of his father's death. I'm assuming that Robbie was John Anderson's son (from the date)but have found no record of this. The letter refers to Nellie (I assume Ellen Anderson, John's daughter) and 'wee Jock' John Anderson's grandson? Also reference to two boats 'The Pamela' gifted to my great grandfather in the letter, and named after Robbie's youngest daughter, and 'The Ivanhoe', my great grandfather's boat which I understand was the first fishing boat in Burnmouth to have an engine.

If anyone can confirm my assumption or has an interest in the letter please get in touch. John

Family History
This Burnmouth site and associated family history support is the best I've ever found. Marvellous. I now have a comprehensive tree of my wife's Burnmouth forebears plus so much more in background information.
I wonder if anyone can help me with a further query? My wife's family used to meet up with 'cousins' when holidaying at Eyemouth in the late 1940's and in the 1950's. She recalls the names 'Eck & Lizzie' and that the cousins were associated with two local boats, 'The Good Hope' & 'The Dolly Graham'. She also thinks that some of the cousins were of the Lindores family. Can anyone remember or confirm who owned crewed these boats??
We'd also love to get copies of some of Brian Bell's old postcards of Burnmouth if someone can point us in the right direction. Stuart Glynn

dates for photos slide show
I am researching Aitchison forebears in Burnmouth and have found the Family History Forum very helpful. Thank you to those who have put it together.
In the 'Names for Photos' slide show in the Forum section number 13 is a photo of Alexander Speirs Aitchison, younger brother of our forebear William, supplied by Walter Holden.
We'd love to get a copy if that's possible. Can anyone help with this ?

Anderson/ Spouse connections
I've recently starting researching ancestors from Ross. I would really like to know about James Anderson born 1860 son of Alexander Anderson and Ellen Collin. He was my paternal great grandfather and married Jane Spouse in October 1884 in Ross Summerhill church. I have nothing about his family tree yet- there is a thought he was conneced to the Leith family from Eyemouth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Black and White TV Series
The series, shot in the mid 1970s was called Supergran. It was shot partly at Partanhall, Burnmouth but also at Tynemouth and Cullercoats, Northumberland.
Posted by Elizabeth on 16 July 2008
Supergran? I might be wrong but you could be confusing it with the childrens programme starring Gudrun Ure which wasn't on TV till the 1980's and parts of that were filmed in Tynemouth? The B&W programme I remember was part of the'programmes for schools'series.

Childrens TV drama
Can anyone else remember the Black and White childrens TV drama that was filmed in Burnmouth? Remember watching it several times in the 1970s. Anyone remember the name of it and some of the local 'stars' who appeared in the background shots?

Lads, maybe it's a personal thing, but I don't think having "Dog Fouling" as a section of the left-hand nav is necessarily portraying the village in the best possible light.

Old stone house misssing roof
My daughter and I were traveling from Berwick-upon-Tweed To Dunbar on the National Express last week and saw a remarkable old house that was on a platteau half way down a cliff to the sea. It had all four walls but was missing the roof. The structure sat on a plateau with a sheer drop down to the sea. I was hoping someone could tell me about an old stone building whose roof had caved in. How does one get to it? What is it's address. Who owns it? What was it used for?
Basically I would love to know its story. Thanks for thelp.

regarding old stonehouse as an ex burnmouth resident all i know of it is it is an old fishermans cottage and has been derelict as long as i can remember i used to play there when i was a wee laddy only way i can remember to get to there is walking along the cliff tops from burnmouth or berwick or via boat hope this gives you a small insight into the past of the old stonehouse brian + jane west midlands
Posted by on 20 May 2008
Is there a sandy beach at the foot of the cliff where this ruin stands with skeers of rock on either side?
If so I too played there as a child. When I was young I was told that the house burned down in the 1940s; allegedly a tramp had been sleeping in it and may have been careless with a match.I seem to remember that it was called Lumburn. It may have been possible to gain access from the Berwick road as well as along the cliffs. Can anyone verify any of this?
Posted by Evelyn Ramsay on 05 June 2008
regarding the old stone house there is rock skeers down below the front of the stone house theres a winch to pull boats in there plus there is a cave house down there u can get there from berwick or burnmouth o yeah 1 more thing the house is called the old lopster house and you are rite it is at lunburn from brian bell west midlands.
Posted by brian bell on 19 June 2008
As I remember you can also access it from the A1 although you have to cross the railway via a gate which connected the fields on either side of the track. As well as the winch there are also a couple of fishermans stores which were cut into the sheer rockface with bricked frontage. When I was younger I always wondered how much it would have cost to repair and move in, peaceful with a cracking view of the sea, except a pain when you had to walk for a newspaper! LOL

Just a wee note to say how handy the weather page is.
Saves having to watch the gloomy tv news to get to the weather forecast.
And on this site you have a more accurate forecast for exactly where you live..

If you find Flickr.com on the web and look for my user name - 'borderglider' you will be able to find the Burnmouth Set.

Sorry but this message board does not allow web addresses to be posted.

Hope you enjoy the photos of this remarkable place.

My father William Telford was born in Burnmouth in October 1925. He lived with his family in coastguard cottage (his father was William Telford, senior, who worked at Burnmouth station at that time). He then moved to Musselburgh, where he lived and raised his own family. He followed in his father's footsteps by working on the railway as a guard from the age of 14 until retirement and sadly passed away in March 2005. I had a bench placed on the coastal path, just behind the kirk, in his memory and visit once a year (twice if I can make it). I would dearly love to speak to anyone who's parents would remember my father.

BurnmouthCC web pics
Some great photo's here. Is it possible to have certain originals e-mailed to me, as they contain family members? I am only talking about 3 photo's, and would like them in a high enough resolution to print from for my father who was born in Burnmouth in the 1920's. My Uncle is in the 1936 school shot, and my grandfather is one of the 'Burnmouth Nuts'.

Family of Mary Paulin
Does anyone have any information regarding my grandfather, George Mills (born 1882)? He was from the Belford area and in 1907 married my granmother, Mary Paulin (born 1884 at Burnmouth. They settled in Berwick, where he became a maltster.

Burnmouth Proper
I now have all the information I was wanting concerning Burnmouth Proper. Thanks for that information and to everyone who has helped me trace my family, the Paulins.

To compplete the picture re the Paulins, does anyone have any further information (in addition to that on the website)regarding Mary Curle, who is included in the Paulin's tree?

Burnmouth 'Proper'
One of my ancestors is recorded as living at Burnmouth 'Proper' during the 19th century. About 70 others also resided there. Can anyone tell me whether this was one building or an area of the village? If it was just one building, what was it like. Was it perhaps a workhouse or something simillar? Any information would be appreciated.
Posted by Phil Ibbetson on 09 January 2008
The term 'Proper' (used after the noun) just means 'Precise'or 'Actual'.

So, I would interpret it as "your ancestors were living in the village of Burnmouth made up of around 70+ residents"

Burnmouth families
I have done much family history of Burnmouth families and always eager to learn more. I was born there in 1926, with Fairbairn, Martin, Johnston, Aitchison, Spouse, Kellie and Paulin connections. Also interested in any Mark Anderson descendents.

Hi Jane,
I think I may be able to help with the Burnmouth/Mallaig connections. At the moment I am researching my Burnmouth ancestors. The names which crop up in Mallaig are Johnston, Aitchison and Martin. How can I get in touch with you. eve
Posted by Evelyn on 23 July 2007
Hi Eve, my email is jane.henderson@lochaber.uhi.ac.uk. I did a paper on the 'Lobstermen of Mallaig' for my degree, extensively researching the Burnmouth connection by interviewing descendants of the original fishers. It would be nice to make contact. Regards Jane

Jane Henderson - I think I can give you information re Sammy Martin. He was the brother of my uncle by marriage, James Fairbairn Martin. I was shown the family gravestone in Ayton Churchyard, and the details are as follows:
James Martin, died 19.9.21 aged 53 (mother of Sammy)
Helen Fairbairn Martin d 13.10.35 aged 60 (mother of Sammy)
Thomas Martin, d 2.12.51 aged 48 of TB (brother of Sammy)
Agnes Martin died 13.1.1952 aged 52 (sister of Sammy; worked at Mallaig from a shed on pier)

I wonder if you have considered starting a family history section to
your website.

I think I am a descendant of a Mark Anderson who was killed in the 1881
disaster as well as the Johnstones.

I think there may be many more descendants who would like a way of
getting in touch.

I am coming to stay in Burnmouth in August and would be pleased to meet
with anyone who can talk to me about the history of the place or who is
also descended from Mark Anderson.

By the way I think your website is execellent - easy to move around and
good photos - they make me really excited about coming to stay.
Many thanks
